How to Choose a Spiritual Director
Many qualities go into the formation of a spiritual director. We encourage you to learn more at the Spiritual Directors International (SDI) website, particularly their Portrait of a Spiritual Director.
As you begin to seek a spiritual director, you may wish to meet with more than one before settling on a director who seems to be a good fit. (Many spiritual directors offer a free initial visit — be sure to ask.) The SDI website also offers a helpful list of questions to explore during an initial interview to help you discern whether a particular spiritual direction relationship is right for you.
SDN believes that each spiritual director, in order to maintain high standards of training and spiritual discipline:
- Has training and experience in accompanying others as they explore the spiritual dimension of their lives.
- Is in spiritual direction themselves.
- Participates in ongoing supervision of their spiritual direction practice.
